Viñas Feroces, the first Spanish red wine from Ribera del Cuarzo

It comes from old vines in Elvillar, in Rioja Alavesa

Old Tempranillo, Graciano, and Viura vineyards, planted in Spain’s Sierra de Cantabria—some as far back as 1922— are the origin of Viñas Feroces, a red wine crafted by Felipe Menéndez, Nesti Bajda, César León, and Pepe Hidalgo using grapes from the León family.

The limited edition of 2,000 bottles has just been released in Argentina, marking the beginning of a new chapter in which the Patagonian winery Ribera del Cuarzo begins to explore new terroirs.

Produced in Rioja Alavesa, within the framework of the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin (Denominación de Origen Calificada, Rioja, DOCa), Viñas Feroces 2023 underwent 12 months of aging divided between 1,200‑liter foudres and 500‑liter first‑use barrels, followed by 6 months of refinement in stainless steel tanks.

Deep, bright red in color, it offers aromas of spiced red and black fruit. On the palate, it is fluid, with medium‑plus tannins and plenty of texture that lingers on the finish. A touch of chalk, medium yet juicy acidity, and solid aging potential define this red, ideal for pairing with game meats, risottos, and hearty stews. Its alcohol content is 14%
